Accessibility is Fair Housing

April is Fair Housing Month.

Every April the United States of America recognizes Fair Housing Month in honor of the Fair Housing Act being signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson on April 11, 1968.

The Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination in housing because of race, color, national origin, religion, sex (including gender identity and sexual orientation), disability, and familial status.

We focus on accessibility at Lumina Compliance.

For any property with an Occupancy Date of 3/13/1991 or later, the Fair Housing Act requires new multi-family dwellings with four or more units to have certain features to meet the Act's accessibility requirements. These features include:

  • Accessible entrance

  • Accessible common areas

  • Doors: Must be wide enough for wheelchairs

  • Accessible routes

  • Light switches, outlets, and thermostats: Must be in accessible locations

  • Reinforced bathroom walls: Must be for future installation of grab bars

  • Usable kitchen and bathrooms: Must be accessible for wheelchairs

Is your property meeting the requirements of the Fair Housing Act? What better time to get on top of this than April, Fair Housing Month?

Lumina Compliance is ready to help you make sure your property is accessible in accordance with the Fair Housing Act.
