Indiana opens its largest, most accessible playground
IT’S GOOD NEWS TIME!
Today’s Good News story comes out of Corydon, Indiana. The Possibility Playground, located in Hayswood Nature Preserve opened in October 2023.
The Possibility Playground is Indiana’s largest, most accessible playground that is in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. It is also the largest inclusive playground in the country.
With 32,000 square feet of fenced-in play space, the playground features swings, climbing equipment, and 18 different slides. The project took about five years to complete. To pay for the project, Harrison County government funds along with funds from the American Rescue Plan and a community foundation grant were used.
“Regardless of your mobility, regardless of any disability or any part of that spectrum, this playground is for you,” Otto Schalk, one of the leaders of the project, told Louisville, Kentucky’s WLKY News.
Max is 16 and has never been on a slide before.
"For the first time, Max was able to go down a slide. There was pure joy and excitement on his face,” Max’s parent Joshua Bowen told Louisville’s WDRB News. “As a parent, it just really hits you right there in the heart. Just to see him around other kids is one thing. Seeing him be able to accomplish things he's never been able to accomplish in his 16 years, it just touches us."
